Post Topics

Below is a list of potential blog posts for each section of your GINS novel. Make sure to read carefully and choose wisely (if there is a choice).

Assessment

Each post that you write should be well-developed and showcase your:

-understanding through close reading and use of SPECIFIC details to support your ideas (K & S)

-taking careful notes using the Talking to the Text active reading strategy (K & S)

-critical thinking and consideration of multiple perspectives (I)

-ability to write with care and attention to mechanics and clarity (WH)

-intentional communication choices to engage your audience (think: Goldilocks zone) (C)

-sensitivity to the often difficult reality of the issue(s) raised in your book (E)

The requirements above are also guidelines as to how you will be assessed. Ensure you understand, and ask questions if you don't!

A word on length: I hate assigning a specific length, so I won't but...you know "just a few sentences" or a huge, long block of unedited and unconsidered text will NEVER meet expectations. Consider my past comments on your writing, and ensure those comments are taken into account. Have I frequently asked you to "expand" or "explain," or include "more specific details?" Then you will need to ADD more to your posts. Have I asked you to "consider paragraphs" or said "this is repetitive" or "these words are unnecessary?" Then you will need to revise for flow, and ensure you are focused on being precise and concise, and intentional.

Option 1
Introduce the main character/person in your novel to your readers. Provide details that will help your readers understand, sympathize, or possibly even empathize with this character/person.

OR

Option 2
Discuss the setting of your novel. Help those who read your blog understand the place. What role might the place play in the development of the issue in your novel?

Option 1
Now that you are of the way through your novel, discuss something that surprised you.

OR

Option 2
Now that you are of the way through your novel, discuss something that angered you.

OR

Option 3
Now that you are of the way through your novel, discuss something that saddened you.

OR

Option 4
Now that you are of the way through your novel, discuss something that disappointed you.

No Choice (everyone must write on this):
Explore the concept of rights and freedoms as it relates to your novel. Consider what connections you can make between the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms* and your GINS novel.

*After our work on the Charter and rights in Canada, you might find these resources helpful. In other words, refresh your memory using these videos:
(This first one seems to be from a questionable site (the “Donate Now” button is a concern) but I have viewed it already and it is accurate and useful!)

Option 1
Now that you are almost done your novel and have a good understanding of the issue and the characters/people, rewrite the story from the perspective of a minor character in the story. This change in perspective should show something MORE about the story. You're not just changing "I went to the store" to "He went to the store."

In your post, include a short explanation paragraph so the readers of your blog understand what you are doing, whose perspective you are taking, and why.

You MUST include DIRECT QUOTATIONS from your novel in your piece! Make sure you include the page number of where that quotation came from in your novel.

Option 2
Now that you are almost done your novel and have a good understanding of the issue and the characters/people, rewrite the story from the perspective of a Canadian living at the time of your issue. This change in perspective should show something MORE about the story.

In your post, include a short explanation paragraph so the readers of your blog understand what you are doing, whose perspective you are taking, and why.

You MUST include DIRECT QUOTATIONS from your novel in your piece! Make sure you include the page number of where that quotation came from in your novel.

*A strategy for success in this post would be to create a narrative map for the novel you are reading (or have read) in order to help you determine HOW to rewrite this story from a different perspective.

*Remember, I am looking for the depth of your thinking on the character AND the novel...
